The knotted updo is a simple style that looks a lot more complex than it actually is. Once you get the hang of knotting your hair, this is the perfect professional—but still fun—hair style for the office.

Follow these simple steps to get the look:

Step 1: Get rid of tangles

Brush your hair to remove any tangles. Although we’re about to create knots, we don’t want to begin with any.

Step 2: Create your knot

Add in hair from either side to your original two sections and tie into another knot below the first one.

Step 1: Prep your hair

To get started, part your hair down the middle and brush through to get any tangles out.

Step 2: Create a ponytail

Pull your hair back at the nape of your neck. Make sure not to pull back too tightly. Leaving your ponytail loose enough to allow some hair to cover the tips of your ears will make the style look less harsh and more effortless.
