5 Celebrity Stylist Tips to Make Your Blowout Last Through a Workout

You don’t need to sacrifice a gym day for a good hair day anymore.

As anyone who works out frequently would know, no blowout is strong enough to withstand an hour-long sweaty fitness session. Even if it was styled with a series of powerhouse products designed to combat frizz, flyaways and oil, there’s no chance your hair is making it out of that workout unscathed.

Fortunately, though, you don’t have to sacrifice a gym day in the name of a good hair day. There are myriad ways to make your blowout last through a workout. It all comes down to the way you style it before exercising and the products you use after your sweat sesh, says L'Oréal Paris expert and celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Colombini.

Below, the hair pro shares his best tips for how to make your blowout last and stay fresh following a workout.

1. Put Your Hair Up

Nothing is more annoying than having to stop mid-workout to fix your hair. In order to avoid hair sticking to your sweaty face, Colombini says you’re going to want to put your hair up and off your body since this will generate less sweat. He recommends twisting your hair into a bun to keep the body of your blowout.

But don’t just secure your tresses into place with just any old elastic. Putting your hair up into a tight ponytail or bun using a rubber band could cause hair breakage and leave a dreaded dent in your blowout. Instead, use bobby pins, clips or coily hair ties to prevent ruining that pricey blowout you just treated yourself with.

2. Wear A Headband

Colombini also advises wearing a workout-friendly headband or sweatband while you’re in the zone. “They’re great ways to keep hair from getting wet from sweat,” he says.

So after safely securing your hair up, finish your look with either accessory to absorb any sweat you build up during your workout.

3. Use Dry Shampoo

If you don’t want to wash your hair, dry shampoo will be your best friend for salvaging your blowout. Colombini recommends reaching for the L'Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Air Volume Dry Shampoo after a workout.

This hair care savior absorbs any kind of moisture (think: excess oil and sweat) from your scalp, leaving it feeling refreshed and renewed. It’s also great for all hair types, especially for anyone with darker tones since it never leaves behind an unappealing white residue on your roots.

For best results, spritz a bit of dry shampoo through your hair before your sweat sesh so it can suck up any moisture. Follow with a bit more of the product following your workout, too.

Editor’s tip: The L’Oréal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Tinted Dry Shampoo for Dark Tones or Light Tones are also great options for targeting an oily scalp

4. Avoid Touching Your Hair

It’s already hard enough not to touch your hair. But if you’ve just finished a workout, you’re going to need to use all your self-control to not run your fingers through your mane, says Colombini.

When you touch your hair with your hands during a workout, it can stimulate oil production in the scalp. That’s why wearing your hair up and out of your face is crucial for maintaining your blowout.

5. Refresh With A Blow Dryer

When your scalp and hair are dry, revive your blowout with a blow dryer. Wrap your hair under and around a round brush, and direct the blow dryer to your roots. This will provide a boost of volume and body to post-workout hair.

Just be sure to use a heat protectant — like the L'Oréal Paris Elvive Dream Lengths Heat Slayer Pre-Iron Spray Leave-In — to avoid any further hair damage or breakage. Stay away from using many products, especially heavier ones, to prevent extra unwanted weigh down.
