If you’re anything like us, then you probably switch between throwing your hair into a messy bun and letting it sway in the wind as you walk through your day. But with so many cool hairstyle tutorials out there, why not change up your style and try something new altogether? Half-up hairstyles are super-popular these days, so there’s never been a better time to try one of these looks yourself. But instead of whipping half of your mane into a high pony, keep reading to find out how to do a modern take on the nostalgic ‘90s ‘do. We’re here to introduce you to one of our very favorite—and easy!—hairstyles, the triple twist half updo. Follow along with our tutorial below.
What you’ll need:
L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray
L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Fine Control Hairspray
Bobby pins
Rat tail comb
Get the look by following these simple steps:
Step 1: Start with beach waves. After you hop out of the shower and towel-dry your hair, flip your hair over and spritz it with the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle AIR DRY IT Wave Swept Spray. Make sure to spray on the top and bottom of your hair so that you’ll be able to create texture throughout your mane. Once you’ve sprayed your hair, scrunch it every few minutes while letting it air dry to help coax it into a beachy, carefree shape.
Step 2: Create a center part. Once your hair is dry, use a rat tail comb to part it down the middle so that you have equal amounts of hair on each side.
Step 3: Twist a small front section of hair closest to your part. Grab a small section of hair closest to your part and twist it back towards the crown of your head. You want this to look super-whimsical, so, unlike other twisted hairstyles, you don’t want to incorporate more hair as you twist back. Simply twist the front section all the way back so that it will be loose and natural-looking.
Step 4: Gently pancake your twisted section. With your twist secured in one hand, use your other hand to gently pull your twist apart to give it a bit more romantic, undone flair. Once it’s pancaked to perfection, pin your twist in place with a bobby pin.
Step 5: Repeat steps 3-4 twice. Directly below your first undone twist, create another twist and another after that. Pin all twists individually so that they’re secure enough to stay in place all day.
Step 6: Follow the same process on the other side. Now that one side of your head is complete, repeat the same exact process on the other side of your head. When pinning your twists in place, use some extra hair to conceal all of the bobby pins so the back of your head looks like a slightly messy, undone half-up look.
Step 7: Finish with hairspray. Since this hairstyle is quite loose, make sure to spray your end look with a coat of the L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle LOCK IT Fine Control Hairspray.
Another Take on the Triple Twist Hairstyle
While we love the half-up look, if you’re more of an all-hair-up type of gal, after you twist your front sections of hair back, you can split the rest of your hair into three sections to create a low updo. All you have to do is rope braid each of those sections and wrap them up into low buns secured in place with bobby pins. Before pinning each rope braid into place, gently pull them apart to make them a bit fluffier, which will lend to a more voluminous-looking bun in the end. Once your bun is secured, pull out a few face-framing strands and you’re ready for whatever your day has in store. Pair this look with anything from bright red lipstick to your favorite nude eye shadow and you’re sure to catch a few stares along the way.
