Your eyebrows play a huge role in your beauty look—they frame your face and define your features. This is why so many brow trends—like soap brows—keep popping up. That said, there are bound to be days that you’d like to give your brows a boost without going overboard on eyebrow makeup. For those days, natural eyebrows are the way to go. How do you get natural-looking eyebrows? Below, we’re sharing how to fill in eyebrows naturally and embrace natural eyebrow shapes—consider this the no-makeup makeup look for your brows.
How Do You Get Natural Eyebrows?
To achieve the look of natural eyebrows, you’ll need to turn to eyebrow grooming tools and products. Knowing how to fill in eyebrows naturally is all about subtly enhancing your natural brow look and applying your makeup with a light hand. There are countless natural eyebrow shapes, and this trend is all about embracing yours.
STEP #1: GROOM YOUR BROWS
Great eyebrows—especially natural eyebrows—start with proper grooming. So, grab a pair of tweezers, a spoolie, and angled eyebrow scissors and head over to our article, How to Shape Your Eyebrows Based on Your Face Shape, for a step-by-step guide to grooming your brows. If your eyebrows are already plucked and trimmed to your liking, you can move on to the next step.
STEP #2. REMOVE EXCESS PRODUCT
Next, make sure you’re starting with a clean canvas. While you’ll likely apply your face makeup prior to doing your brows, it’s important there’s no residue left behind on your eyebrows that could get in the way of your makeup. Saturate a cotton pad with micellar water, like the L’Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser Waterproof - All Skin Types, and gently wipe it over your brows to remove any excess buildup of product, dirt, and oil.
STEP #3. GRAB YOUR SPOOLIE
Reach for a clean spoolie (a small brush that resembles a mascara wand) to help brush your brows and identify any sparse areas of your eyebrows that may need to be filled in. Comb the spoolie through your eyebrows in an upward direction toward your hairline to find the natural edges of your brow—it’ll look a little crazy, but that’s OK!
STEP #4. FILL IN WHERE NEEDED
If you’ve found yourself asking, “How can I color my eyebrows naturally?”, it all comes down to your brow pencil and your technique. Use an ultra-fine eyebrow pencil—like the L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Definer Waterproof Eyebrow Mechanical Pencil—paired with the upward brushing technique we just mentioned to subtly fill in any bald spots. Use the tip of your pencil to draw light, feathered strokes anywhere the hair is sparse.
Alternatively, you can use the L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Micro Ink Pen by Brow Stylist, Up to 48HR Wear, which features a comb-tip applicator for natural, hair-like strokes. You’ll also want to take the color of your eyebrow pencil into consideration: For a natural eyebrow look, try to find a shade that matches your actual eyebrows as closely as possible. If you can’t find a perfect match, go for a shade that’s slightly lighter to err on the safe side, since a color that’s darker will create a more dramatic, unnatural brow look.
STEP #5. TWEAK YOUR SHAPE
At this point in your routine, you can adjust your natural eyebrow shape. Keep in mind that since you’re going for a natural eyebrow look, you’ll want to keep tweaks to a minimum. Sharpen your arch and extend your brows a bit if you like, but avoid going overboard to ensure a natural finish.
STEP #6. BRUSH IT OUT
Once you’re satisfied with your look, gently comb through your brows once more with your spoolie brush. This will help blend out your eyebrow makeup and blur any harsh lines for a more natural look. Finally, brush your brow hairs in the direction you’d like them to go. For an extra fluffy, natural finish, brush the inner half of your brows toward your hairline and comb the tail outward toward your ears.
STEP #7. FLUFF AND SEAL
To give your brows a boost of volume and keep hairs in place, run the L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Boost & Set Brow Mascara in Clear through your eyebrows. If you don’t have a brow gel on hand, clear mascara or even hair gel will do in a pinch.
