They say that life is more fun in color, and we happen to think the same rule applies to your beauty look. We’ve talked about rainbow hair colors and rainbow eye makeup, but perhaps you’d like to experiment with the menagerie of colors in a new way. Speaking of rainbow makeup, with the latest makeup trend, you can almost taste the rainbow. What are we referring to? Rainbow lips, of course! Yup—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet have made their way from the sky to your pout, and we can’t get enough of it. Read on for a step-by-step tutorial on how to get rainbow lips. You may just find a pot of gold at the end!

Get the look by following these simple steps:
STEP #1. PREP YOUR POUT
When you dare to wear such a bold lip makeup look, it’s important to put in the prep work. You wouldn’t want a flakey, uneven surface to spoil your rainbow lips, would you? We thought not. To ensure you have a smooth, soft canvas, be sure to exfoliate your pout prior to reaching for your rainbow lipsticks. To exfoliate your lips, massage a sugar scrub onto your lips in circular motions with wet fingers. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
STEP #2. SMOOTH ON A PRIMER
We aren’t done with the prep work just yet! Since rainbow lips involve using several highly-saturated lipsticks, a lip primer is a must. Not only will it help your lip look last day and night, but it’ll also allow for your lip colors to appear more vibrant. Swipe one on before moving onto lipstick.
STEP #3. BEGIN THE RAINBOW
It’s time to bring your rainbow to life! The order and placement of your lipsticks are totally up to you, though we prefer to stick with the traditional ROYGBIV order. You’ll want to use a clean lip brush to apply each shade for a precise application. Between shades, dip your brush into micellar water to wipe it clean for the next color! Start by applying your red lipstick to the right of the center of your bottom lip. Then smooth your orange shade onto the right corner of your lips, applying a small amount of color to both the bottom and top lip.
STEP #4. ADD MORE COLOR
Next, reach for your yellow or gold lipstick. Apply this next to your orange lipstick on your top lip, stopping at your cupid’s bow. Smooth your green lipstick onto the other half of your top lip. Use your blue lipstick to color the left corner of your lip, applying a small amount to both the top and bottom as you did with your orange hue. Next up, indigo! The last lipstick you’ll want to apply is violet, popping the purple shade onto the center of your bottom lip.
STEP #5. BLEND, BLEND, BLEND
You’re not done yet! While you could leave your lips with their striped appearance, we’re sure you’d prefer a seamless transition between shades, just like the rainbow. After cleaning your lip brush one last time, use it to gently blend the lines between colors using small, circular motions.
STEP #6. FIX ANY MESS UPS
Did a rainbow hue or two end up outside the lines? No worries! Dip a cotton swab in micellar water and clean up the edges of your lip look.
STEP #7. SET YOUR LOOK
You wouldn’t want your rainbow lips to get messed up throughout the day, so it’s important to use a setting spray as the last step in your routine. Mist one over your rainbow lips as your lucky charm!
