Sir John Shares Why Multi-Masking Your Foundation Is A Game Changer

Sheer coverage plus an effective way to conceal? Sign us up!

Sometimes we wish our foundation formula could conceal only certain areas, without feeling cakey on places we don’t need the extra coverage. L’Oréal Paris consulting celebrity makeup artist Sir John has just the answer: multimasking.  Instead of relying on just one foundation to camoflauge areas you want to conceal, opt for “multi-masking” your foundation by using a combination of two different makeup products to get the look. Ahead, we break down his  best tips for executing the multi-masking foundation technique in four easy steps.

Step 1: Prep the Skin

Start as you normally would by prepping the skin with a moisturizer and primer to give you a soft, even finish. We love the L’Oréal Paris Hydra Genius Daily Liquid Care Moisturizer for Normal/Oily Skin. Next, add a layer of primer like the L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Makeup Blurring Face Primer infused with Serum that will color-correct, brighten and leave your skin feeling smooth.

Step 2: Choose Your Formulas

When it comes to choosing your two foundation formulas (or face products) to multi-mask, Sir John notes that the goal is not to mix them. “I wouldn’t change the formula by mixing two products together, instead, I’d focus a heavier foundation on different areas like the T-Zone and a sheer serum everywhere else,” he says.

For the lighter coverage areas, we love the L’Oréal Paris True Match Nude Hyaluronic Tinted Serum which provides a sheer tint that leaves the skin feeling hydrated. For more heavy-duty coverage, opt for the L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24 Hour Fresh Wear Foundation.

Step 3: Start With Your Lighter Coverage Areas

First thing’s first, apply the True Match Nude Hyaluronic Tinted Serum all over the face to even out your complexion, but avoid the areas where you want full-coverage. This formula will not only let your skin shine through, it will also leave skin feeling hydrated for hours — so you won’t have to worry about flakes or dryness. Sir John recommends focusing a little extra product on areas you want to highlight, including the bridge of the nose, on the temples and the cheekbones.

Step 4: Multi-Mask With Heavier Coverage

After blending in the sheer tint, go back to those spots you left behind (likely the T-Zone, and areas with blemishes, including around the nose and chin), and tap in the Infallible 24 Hour Fresh Wear Foundation with a damp makeup blender or foundation brush. The higher-coverage will help keep these areas concealed and matte for up to 24 hours, not to mention, this formula is transfer-resistant and waterproof. Use a large fluffy powder brush and buff in a layer of the L’Oréal Paris Up to 24H Fresh Wear in a Powder, matte finish to lock in these areas.
